Improve the Log Loader's Seating

Operating a log loader involves sitting for long periods of time, which increases the load on the spine as well as stresses the discs and ligaments of the lower back.

Ideal log loader seating includes:

  • Lumbar support that helps maintain the curve of the lower back.
  • Adjustable features to adapt to different operators.
  • Vibration dampening cushions.
  • A breathable, non-slip material.

If your current log loader lacks these features, consider upgrading the seat.

Vary the Body Posture

Holding static postures can lead to operator issues, such as lower back strain. Log loader operators should get up from the seat multiple times throughout the day. This gives a break for the spine, allows the discs to equalize, and lets ligaments (which get stretched out from sitting) regain their stiffness.

Aim for stretch breaks every hour. Be sure to stretch out the back, legs, hips, neck, shoulders. and wrists.

Maintain the Worksite

When a log loader passes over a hazard, such as a pothole, it can cause vibrations that take a toll on the operator. Try to maintain the worksite and keep it free of these hazards as much as possible.

Wear the Right Shoes

Get proper-fitting boots or shoes that offer greater flexibility in the ankle area, such as options that have shorter ankle supports. This allows for easier movement of the ankle and foot, which leads to less muscle fatigue when operating the log loader's pedals.

Keep the Window Clear

When windows get dirty or fogged up, it reduces visibility. Log loader operators can end up straining trying to see the area ahead.

Start by regularly cleaning the log loader's windows. Be sure to check the owner's manual for any model-specific cleaning products or procedures.

Next, make sure your log loader has well-maintained windshield wipers on the front and back windows. If your model lacks wipers, get them installed.

Engage in Maintenance Exercises

Log loader operators can engage in maintenance exercises outside of work. These will help strengthen and maintain the muscles so that the body can have a higher loading tolerance, which helps reduce the chacnes of injury.
